I live in a small city.

Actually, I live in a BIG “small town”.

While it’s big enough that everyone doesn’t *really* know everyone and you have access to an international airport 30 mins away (which is a sweet deal).  It is small enough that we have a main street that’s still called ‘Main Street’. With an Olde Towne movie theatre that plays independent films, cute coffee shops and book stores that are shaded by overhanging trees lining both sides of the street.  That set-up is what chick-flicks are made of, right?

But it’s not the physical description that helps someone understand a place.  As I saw today at the Winter Carnival’s annual parade, it’s about what the people are doing that really gives you an inside look.  Vernon is the type of place where the librarians come out with their book carts during a parade.  Where a local group wants to “Build the Clubhouse” for children with developmental challenges.  Where staff at a large grocer are out promoting fresh fruits for kids, ok and maybe some cookies too : )  No one was exempt from showcasing their contributions to the community.  The City of Vernon was there to wave and smile, advocates for sustainable energy made an appearance and even a church managed to throw in some free Bibles.  To wrap it all up I found out Vernon has its very own ‘Button Guy’!
